Suggest Treatment For Severe Upper Stomach Pain

My 17 year old granddaughter has been having pain in her upper stomach area and her back has been hurting on and off and sometimes she feels nauseous but she can t throw up and she gets sharp pain and cramps in her upper stomach and it hurts her to sleep certain ways and when she does sleep it is only for 20 minutes. Could this be indigestion or appendix systems? Thank you for your time!

Thank you for your query

Would you please clarify a few things for?

1)does she have any medical long standing medical issues (problems with the thyroid, heart, blood pressure, hormonal disturbance)

2) is she on any medication?

3)does she have any loose stools, high colored (dark) urine?

4)is the pain more just after she has eaten or after a few hours or no association with food?

5)is it an achy /poking/piercing/dull/cramping sort of pain? Does she feel the pain anywhere else (shoulder)? Does the pain on her back occur concomitantly with the stomach pain?

6)does she have any throat irritation (dry cough) or heart burn?

Her symptoms may indicate gastritis /Peptic ulcers. This happens the stomach acid damages the normal mucosal lining and erodes it. The acid is there to aid in digestion. Too much of it or improper dietary habits can trigger gastritis and lead to ulcers if left untreated.
Other conditions that may cause her symptoms could problems with the liver, duodenum, gall bladder or pancreas. I've elaborated only on what I think is most likely. I suggest she sees her doctor to confirm diagnosis and initiate treatment.

In the meantime, she should hydrate herself well, have bland & easily digestible food, avoid caffeine & carbonated drinks, avoid hot drinks. Milk is a natural antacid and may help relieve some pain. Elevate her head on two or more pillows (approx. 30 degrees) while she sleeps to prevent reflux. She should be on an empty stomach for too long (frequent meals during the day will help neutralize the acid)

Indigestion may cause some cramping, loose stools, bloating which resolves without treatment in a day or so. Food poisoning may need antibiotics if it leads to an infection (symptoms include diarrhea, fever, cramping, bloating)

Appendicitis presents as pain around the umbilical region which then localizes to the right iliac fossa (just above the place where the leg meets the abdomen) and is associated with fever and vomiting.

If she has any alarming symptoms (high fever, severe vomiting, blood in the vomit or stools, disabling pain) take her to ER right away.
Hope this helps. Please get back to us if you have any questions.
Wish you good health
