Suggest Treatment For Severe Tooth Ache

Hi I am 21 years old and I've been having sleepless nights for about a week due to a terrible tooth ache. I called my dentist today and booked an emergency appointment. She took an x-Ray and told me that my tooth is infected and will either need to be taken out or have root canal treatment done. For the meantime she has prescribed me to amoxicillin 500mg capsules to be taken 3 times a day which have given me immediate swelling on my face on the side of the damaged tooth. The pain has increased and the whole of the swollen side of my face has become so fragile. I can't eat, I can't brush my teeth, I'm struggling to talk properly or even move my mouth and it's also affecting my head, ear and eye. As soon as I touch the tooth (which is at the bottom) with the upper teeth I get this instant sharp shooting pain from the tooth to my heart. It's really affecting my sleeping I have not slept properly for a week now and I'm constantly crying. I called the nhs at 2am as an emergency and they said there's nothing they can do about it until I finish my capsules. I'm due for a dentist appointment in a weeks time but I am not able to bear this pain any longer, it is seriously driving me crazy.

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain it seems that the pain and swelling is due to infection which is caused due to the infected tooth due to which there is formation of pus near the tips of roots of the infected tooth thereby causing swelling and radiating pain to eye and ear too..

If after taking amoxicillin there is swelling it may be as a result of side effect of the drug.

But most commonly it seems to be due to infection.

I would suggest you to ask your dentist to provide a higher antibiotic like augmentin if the symptoms are not due to side effect of amoxicillin ad due to infection as augmentin also contain amoxicillin.

There are few other drugs like cephalosporins which can be taken to reduce infection.

The other thing is that if there is pus formation and it does not get any place to get drained it will keep accumulating below the tooth and adjacent tissues and create pain and pressure.

In such a case root canal treatment is initiated under local anaesthesia so that a path can be created by drilling a hole in the tooth from where pus can be drained leading to reduced pain and pressure.

My advise would be that taking high efficiency antibiotics and painkillers and initiation of root canal treatment can relieve your pain.

You can consult an ENDODONTIST who can very well treat your problem and relieve you.

Hope you get well soon..

Thanks and regards..
