Suggest Treatment For Severe Neck Pain While Having Cerebral Palsy

I have an amazing friend who lives with Cerebral Palsy She is 30 years old. About a year ago she started experiencing blackouts . Then in April she was overwhelmed with severe neck pain. The pain was so debilitating that she was put on, and still takes ibuprofen, Tylenol and muscle relaxants 3× a day. She says they don t help anymore. (It s been @ 3 months). The blackouts subsided somewhat when the neck pain took over. She has tried everything from acupuncture to cupping, Reiki and hypnosis. She s optimistic that the neck pain is subsided a little bit however now the blackouts are even more frequent. They are occurring during the night as well, which is something new. She is convinced, although has not been diagnosed, that these are partial or focal seizure? (This is from her own research). The doctors, sadly, are not helpful. She has had 2 referrals to a neurologist rejected. My heart breaks for this incredible woman as she has endured so much in her young life and lives in constant fear of dying. Is it possible that these blackouts or seizures could be a result of stress from cerebral palsy? Where can we go from here to get an accurate diagnosis in order to start her on an appropriate treatment plan? Thank you Sincerely Kimberly

Oncologist 's  Response
Hi,

A physical therapist can teach you correct posture, alignment and neck-strengthening exercises, and can use heat, ice, electrical stimulation and other measures to help ease your pain and prevent a recurrence.

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). Electrodes placed on your skin near the painful areas deliver tiny electrical impulses that may relieve pain.

Traction uses weights, pulleys or an air bladder to gently stretch your neck. This therapy, under the supervision of a medical professional and physical therapist, may provide relief of some neck pain, especially pain related to nerve root irritation.

Short-term immobilization. A soft collar that supports your neck may help relieve pain by taking the pressure off the structures in your neck. However, if used for more than three hours at a time or for more than one to two weeks, a collar might do more harm than good.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Monish De, Oncologist
