Suggest Treatment For Severe Interstitial Cystitis

I have severe interstitial cystitis and I am currently under treatment for that; however, I complained of a constant sharp pain above my umbilical cord (pinching and stabbing pain) and feeling nauseous whenever the bladder pain is bad. My urologist checked for hernia but did not see any. I continue with the pain, but now I feel bloated, my stomach hurt and I have more frequent bowel movements. I don t have diarrhea, but my feces had blood on them and when I wipe I see a brown, foul smelly mucous. Now I am naseous most of the time. I thought it could be a gastroenteritis due to the medicines I take for the cystitis(antibiotics, pain and anti inflammatory pills and for the vomiting), and I have been giving it time to go away by watching my diet, but It s been a week already. What do you recommend me to do? Thanks for your advise and information.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

I am sorry but no single treatment eliminates the signs and symptoms of interstitial cystitis, and no one treatment works for everyone. Often a combination of treatment is given. A tricyclic antidepressant like amitryptiline can be tried, anti-inflammatory analgesics can be taken orally. Pentosan polysulfate sodium used specifically for treating interstitial cystitis. How it works is unknown, but it may restore the inner surface of the bladder, which protects the bladder wall from substances in the urine that could irritate it. Try these treatments.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
