Suggest Treatment For Severe Insomnia, Night Sweats And Anxiety

Hi my name Kelly. I have a daughter that is a sophomore in college. For a year she has been having symptoms that are worrisome to me. To start off, she is on Pristique for anxiety. She is a very active person. Works 2 jobs , works out and goes to college 12 hours. For the past year she has been having night sweats. They actually go through the mattress pad and dampen the mattress. She has severe insomnia. The doctor finally gave her medicine to help her sleep. She is also very tired all the time. When she takes the medicine she is able to sleep. She does not party much at all. There are times that she will though. She is against drugs!! So that is not an option. Yes she has anxiety, but isn t imagining the symptoms. I feel that someone 20 years old should not be dealing with this. It almost sounds like memopause symptoms. Can you give me any suggestions. Her physical is Friday of this week. I think bloodwork needs to be done. Thanks for any suggestions you may have. Sincerely, Kelly Thornburg

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Persistent night sweats, severe insomnia etc in a young individual can occur due to a number of conditions. Hyperthyroid states is one possible reason for such symptoms. Blood work to rule out this condition should be done.

Severe anaemia especially iron deficiency anaemia may also present with similar picture. Her complete blood count can help to rule out this condition.

Some chronic infection is other possibility. To rule out all these medical condition she should be seen by a physician.

She is already on Desvenlafaxine (Pristiq) for anxiety and still she has symptoms of sweating, insomnia etc. Re-evaluation by a psychiatrist can help to rule out these conditions. For sleep and severe anxiety medicines like benzodiazepines can be used for short time. Lorazepam, Clonazepam etc can be used. These medicines help to reduce the symptoms and will help in good sleep also. Please consult a psychiatrist for prescription.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
