Hello.

There are many reasons for hair fall. It can be one of the following starting from the simplest one:

1. Stress related - with more hair going into the telogen phase i.e. the shedding phase. It can be temporary and hair will grow back once the stress is gone. Typically this phase can last for about 3-4 months.

2. Dietary deficiencies - especially of micronutrients like zinc and biotin can cause hair fall. Thesr can be supplemented through diet or supplements.

3. Hormonal imbalances - caused by either stress itself or due to some disorders of thyroid gland, adrenal gland, polycystic ovaries, etc. These can be totally/ partially corrected depending on the underlying cause. Certain investigations can be done to confirm the presence of these conditions if no other cause can be found out. Generally may present as irregular periods in females.

4. Hereditary - occurs more commonly in males.

Different conditions have different treatments. Initially you can try with nutritional supplements or topical minoxidil (after consulting with your dermatologist). If this does not help, further investigation may be required.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr Geeta
