Suggest Treatment For Severe Constipation In A 4 Year Old Child

My grandson is 4 yrs old and very constipated. He tries to go and it appears the bowel movement is too big to pass. We have tried putt Vaseline on his butt hole in and around to help make it easier to go but that is not working. What else can we do. This has been going on for 2 days and his last bowel movement was really hard for him to go. We have been watching his diet the last few days and pushing apple juice. No cheese etc please help. What else should we be doing. Please advise asap. Thanks

Understanding your concern. As per your query your child is having severe constipation which could be due to many reasons such as

- eating a lot of dairy products
- irritable bowel syndrome
- some medications like antidepressants
- acidity
- electrolyte imbalance

Need not to worry. You should start with drinking a lot of water , do light exercises and avoid fatty and heavy meals. give child diet rich in probiotics. I would suggest you to consult gastroenterologist for proper examination. Doctor may order colonoscopy or other tests to look for blockages in your colon , barium studies and blood test for hormonal changes. Doctor may prescribe fiber supplement psyllium, calcium polycarbophil , osmotic laxatives , stool softeners and medicine to reduce acidity.
