Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
The treatment of chronic constipation depends on cause.Possible causes may include:
-Blockages in the colon or rectum like Anal fissure, Colon cancer, Narrowing of the colon, Other abdominal cancer that presses on the colon, Rectal cancer, rectocele
-Problems with the nerves around the colon and rectum like Autonomic neuropathy, Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Spinal cord injury...
-Difficulty with the muscles involved in elimination like anismus, dyssynergia, Weakened pelvic muscles
-Conditions that affect hormones in the body like Diabetes, Overactive parathyroid gland, Pregnancy, Underactive thyroid

With all these possible causes, only a keen examnation by the Doctor with some work-ups may help to identify the exact cause.I will advise you see the Doctor for examination.Tests that may help identify cause may include: thyroid function tests, sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, anorectal manometry, colonic transit study, defecography, abdominal CT scan or MRI.

In the meantime,i will advise the following:
*A laxative like duphalac, Stool softeners, Enemas and suppositories...
*Increase your fiber intake
*Exercise most days of the week
*Eat enough soft fruits like soft pawpaw and water melon but avoid fruits like bananas that may rather constipate
*Take enough water/fluids
*Your Doctor may consider other treatment options depending on the identified cause.
Hope this will help
Wish you good health
