Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi,

I can understand your concern for your mother. It would have been better had you mentioned the exact symptoms that your mother is suffering from. Secondly, I think it would be 100 mg of amisant (amisulpiride) rather than 10 msg as you have mentioned.

Treatment of schizophrenia requires regular medications with frequent follow ups. Using the same dose for 2 years, with frequents breaks in treatment will definitely not lead to improvement. The medications also needs time to act. In your mother's case, it has only been 2 days, that you have re-initiated medicines. So, you will have to be patient about the response.

I also do feel that the dose of amisulpiride will have to be increased. Genearlly, at least 300-400 mg/day dose (maximum 1200 mg/day) is required for response. The drug is started at low dose and gradually increased deepending on response and side effects. Also, due consideration will ahve to be given to your mother's age and any medical problems.

I would suggest you to seek a psychiatric consultation and start treatment accordingly.

Hope this information was helpful. Best wishes.
