Suggest Treatment For Schizophrenia

My Brother Mr Ashutosh Shankar Pandey (age 29 years) has been suffering from schizophrenia. He hails from Ranchi, and has been taking relevant medication for over 2 years now. However he discontinues the medication every now and then. This i believe has led to severe complexities now. I thus write this email to seek your advise about available options for my brother's treatment.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello and thanks for your query.

I understand that you are concerned about your brother's illness and the relevant treatment. Now, the important thing to realize is that Schizophrenia is a chronic mental illness and medication needs to be take regularly and for a long period.

As you have mentioned, poor compliance to medication can lead to relapse of symptoms and complications.

Unfortunately, persons with Schizophrenia lack insight or an understanding about their illness and so, they often keep discontinuing their medication.

In your brother's current scenario, I would advise the following:

1) Firstly, if there has been a severe relapse, the this has to be brought under control. And if he is not willing to take medication, then he may need in-patient treatment.

2) In the long term (after the acute phase of relapse is controlled), you can consider the option of long-acting depot injections, instead of tablets.

3) You need to make arrangements for a caretaker who will be able to monitor him and ensure that he is taking treatment regularly.

Best wishes.

HI
Well come to HCM
Schizophrenia needs continues treatment with regular follow up and the drug regime also goes on changing from time to time this is not just the symptomatic medicine that one can try this home, but schizophrenia can only be treated with Psychiatrist with the close observation and some time this may need counseling also, so in my opinion better to have opinion from the psychiatrist, hope this information helps.
