Suggest Treatment For Right Knee Pain Due To A Pustule

My daughter (age 19) is in another state on a summer job. She is experiencing right knee pain. It started out this morning as what she thought might be an ingrown hair. After trying to mess with and mash it she got a very small amount of white drainage out. Since this morning, however, it has now swollen, is hot and sore to the touch and hurts to put weight on the leg. Approximately 4 days ago, she had another spot on the calf of the same leg which did in fact turn out to be an ingrown hair or pimple. She got pus out of it and the spot is now essentially healed. Is the knee something that needs to be seen about tonight? If not, what signs would indicate a need to do so? For tonight, is there anything she needs to do such as icing the knee and resting?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It can be folliculitis and may need oral antibiotics as well as topical antiseptic washes and topical antibiotics followed by that. For pain and other sensations oral OTC analgesic like acetaminophen or ibuprofen may be helpful for symptomatic relief.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
