Suggest Treatment For Recurring Pneumonia

Had chest x-ray yesterday and heard from doc s office that I have pneumonia . Started taking Levaquin this evening. I am 65 years old and this is my 2nd bout of pneumonia in 3 years. Thought I had the flu last week....since i had a high fever, headache, achey body, and low energy. Felt better over the weekend and then started up with low-grade fever and coughing on Tuesday. Do you think I should ask my doc to have blood work done to know what kind of pneumonia I have and what is best antibiotic? Also....have had labored breathing today and my chest hurts terribly when I cough (which is what I have done most of the day). Also, bad headache. Do you think I should ask my doc tomorrow if I can go to hospital for an IV dose of antibiotics? Just curious if that will help. Thanks! Barbara

Thanks for asking at Healthcare Magic. I read your question and I understand your concern. Recurrent Pneumonia by definition is re attack of pneumonia within 18 months.
So you have no recurrent pneumonia hence you should not be worried that much However as you are 65 years old and you have labored breathing you need IV antibiotics as your CURB 65 score is almost more than 2.
Also you need workup.. CT chest,PFTs and Sputum Culture and sensitivity, ABGs.
For future prevention have vaccination of pneumococcal vaccine 23 and vixigrip.
Hope it helps best.
