Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
The RSV virus occurs is winter and spring most commonly in the first year of life. It cause
bronchiolitis or
pneumonia, symptoms can include
fever, breathing rapidly with the skin between his ribs caving in as he breathes and skin between chest and belly caving in with respirations,
cough,
wheezing. The normal
respiratory rate of awake, well infant between 2 and 12 months of age is 40-45 breaths per minute. Sometimes infants with bronchiolitis can have a respiratory rate over 60. If you grandson is breathing hard like this, then he is working to breathe. Fever also causes an infant to breathe rapidly. You can see why he has no appetite- he is too busy breathing. Still, it is very important to offer him liquids. If he will drink only a small amount of milk, apple juice, or pear juice, then offer what he will take frequently, for example, every five minutes. Give
acetaminophen for fever and to make him feel more comfortable every four to six hours. Since there is no medication to treat this virus, your(and your children's) job is to watch that he does not use more and more effort to breathe, his fever is being treated, he is able to take enough liquids to continue wetting his diaper and keep his mouth moist, he doesn't become blue or stop breathing. This is an infection his body has to fight and overcome. It might take a week or so to see improvement in breathing. From what information you have shared with me, you know this is a serious illness, but you are handling the caregiver's part just fine.
