I am pretty freaked out about a raised, round, firm, pink spot on my scalp. I ve been aware that there was a small bump there for a while, but never thought much of it until I started absentmindedly picking at it several months ago. It bled easily, which bothered me. I would leave it alone for a couple of weeks and then pick at it again, and it would scab up and bleed again. One time I tried to actually puncture it (thinking it was a pimple/plugged hair follicle or something), and it bled and also leaked a clear fluid and seemed to get flatter and scabby afterwards. I visited the family doctor in November, soon after I d picked it and it had temporarily healed, and she said it just looked like a little irritated skin and was nothing to worry about. However, over the past couple of months, it has begun to feel slightly more raised again. It doesn t seem prone to bleeding anymore, however. I visited the family doctor (different doc, as I just got on a new health insurance plan) again today, and he didn t seem concerned about it (even when I said it had bled repeatedly in the past), but gave me a referral to the dermatologist because I asked for one. The thing that scared me was that he said that it was definitely a mole (something that the other doctor hadn t said), which makes me think that it could definitely be an amelanocytic (sp?) melanoma. I have to wait a week for my referral to go through and who knows how long to visit the actual dermatologist, and I am really scared. I have had some atypical moles (though not malignant moles) removed in the past, but none of them have ever bled or crusted over like this one (of course, I also haven t repeatedly picked at them, as I have with this one...). Is it possible that this mole could be benign and has been irritated just because I ve been picking at it? How worried should I be? (I am definitely seeing the dermatologist soon; I just wonder if I should see if they can rush the visit). Thanks so much for your help!
