It doesn t matter how much he works out, and his stomach is very hard. However, it looks like he is pregnant? What could be causing his protruding belly, and what can be done

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi there,
I’m Dr John Borowski. I’m a board certified family physician and I’d be glad to try and help you by answering your question.
It is most likely that your husband’s “pregnant belly” is in fact central obesity which is essentially just fat that increases around the small intestines “inside the abdominal cavity. There may indeed be a very muscular abdominal wall and not much fat around the buttocks, thighs and legs – what we call an “apple” type physique (or a "beer gut"). This distribution of fat is especially common in men – so much so that weight loss programs have been designed specifically for men with big "guts" (e.g. gut-busters).
Unfortunately, this fat inside the belly increases your husband’s risk for diabetes, cholesterol problems and high blood pressure as well as for several other disorders.
Like more obvious “outside fat” your husband’s belly can be reduced with diet and exercise in much the same way as fat in any other distribution - although granted, this is not always easy.
I would recommend seeing a dietician and your family physician to get help with a weight loss and exercise program.
I hope I've been able to help!
