Suggest Treatment For Possible Abscess And Blood Drainage In Leg

On Saturday, I noticed a small bump around my anal cavity that was sensitive to touch. By Sunday it was a round mass and about the size of a quarter, and made it so I could not even walk I was in so much pain. I could not sit up and it hurt to move my legs just to get out of bed. I read online that if it was an abscess, I should apply as much moist heat as possible to assist in it popping itself. This I did with hot wash cloth and heat packs from microwave. Every 20 minutes to 45 minutes. On Monday night at 2 am, I felt my leg was wet and warm, and it had burst. There was blood and pus draining. After taking a shower, I was fully able to walk again with no problems, and today has been fine also. There is still just a slight bit of drainage. My question now is, there is loose skin on the top, but what feels like a hardened mass under the skin where the abscess was. Should I go to the Doctor? I do not have insurance, so I would be paying out of pocket, and I am in college and really don t have the money. I have been taking antibiotics (I had a tooth pulled two days before this, so I have 30 antibiotic pill luckily and pain meds.) Someone told me that it is just going to take time for the skin to heal and the mass will go away over time. I just don t want to take any chances on dying here! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Doc :)

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this. I understand how difficult it is being without health insurance. From the description of your symptoms, this was a thrombosed external hemorrhoids. This is not an abscess. For sure the liquid was not pus but old blood mixed with bright red blood. Because it is ruptured and the pain already relief, there is no urgency to go and see a doctor for this. I will suggest that you continue with sitz baths(sitting for 15-30minutes in a bowl of lukewarm water containing an antiseptic like betadine/iodine/dettol, etc) 3times daily and after each stool. Unless something new coes up, you would be fine.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarification if need be. Thanks for using our services.
