Have persistent upper back pain for a week. Have been using heat patches. Am a runner(5k) and back pain has been affecting my endurance. Should I try back strengthening exercises? considering going to a chiropractor (against my better judgment). any suggestions? am a 59 yr old female in excellent physical health, take no medications

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello Dear. I would like to suggest you to go to an orthopedician who will evaluate you by taking xray/mri scan etc to see whether there is any problem with the spine and vertebral coloumn. If there is a problem the doctor may suggest you to wear corset, take pain killers, adequate rest, back strengthening exercise, physiotherapy etc. If there is no problem in the tests, just moist heat and some rest may suffice. In any case you need to meet an orthopedician to rule out any pathology.

Hope i have answered your question. Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions. I ll be glad to help you.
All the best
With warm regards
Dr Sanjay Kini
