Suggest Treatment For Persistent Heartburns

My wife almost choked on me. She has heartburn frequently. She eats too fast, usually rice but in this case a peice of baby carrot that was not chewed properly. She came out and I could tell it was obstructing the airway but not completely. I tried the hiemlich maneuver but no food came up. A ton of mucus. The airway became open but she still feels like the object is not going down. She had a lot of pain still. She was unable to even swallow saliva. It took a good 10-15 minutes but now she says she is doing better and I have given her hot tea. I think we are out of the woods now but wanted to be sure I have done everything I could besides calling 911?

Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.
Your wife seems to have had a choking experience, which is something we all experience sometimes in different extent.
I think you have been doing the right thing. Waiting for it to spontaneously resolve and than if not resolving doing the heimlich manouver.
Some advises I would give are:
1. it might be better for your wife to have frequent small amount of food- this due to the heartburn and reflux that causes it. It is best to have 4-5 small meals than to have 2-3 big meals in a day.
2. avoid sparkling drinks, coffee, smoking and alcohol drinks as these all can worsen heartburn.
3. chew food well- this will help prevent choking and help with stomach issues also
4. avoid fatty, fried and acid food- to reduce heartburn
5. If choking episodes repeat than your wife needs a visit with a doctor. In this case a fibrogastroscopy (a test that checks your esofagus and stomach) might be helpful to visualize them and see of any cause)
Hope this is helpful to you and answers to your question

Best regards,
I find this answer helpful
