Suggest Treatment For Pernicious Anemia

i needt have someone explain to my patient if he doesn t follow the course plotted out for him for his pernicious anemia i will give up on him there will be no one else , he thinks it s a joke. i am an RN and I do not suffer fools who make their lifes complicated for everyone else around them. Yhis diagnosis was newly discovered but my patient thinks now that all he need are b12 shot and does not need to increase his food intake quality or quqntity. in his eyes an Entemnn Donut is just as nutritious and goes down easier . HE STAYS IN i room claiming he too weak for any walking or hand exercises. HE IS OXEGEN depedent. And eats very little unless it s something I make that he likes. But The food high in B12 he doesn t like. HE MAINLY LIKES JUNK. i ll bring him something healthly in small portion because he will complain of servere stomach pains and can only ear a little but then he ll see the donuts and eat 2 telling me they go downeasy. I THINK HE S A LIAR AND MALLINGER. cOULD i GET A LIST OF high B12 food with a warning of the complications if he doesnt follow through. Thanks, Mary Ann Bruno

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The pernicious anemia management requires a multi modality approach. The primary goal should be aimed at evaluation of intrinsic factor deficiency, disorders of stomach cells via stomach biopsy, lab tests in details.

Once the diagnosis is confirmed, then management with supplemental iron, Vitamin B12, diet and other supportive care comes into the action. If the patient is not co operative for diet, you must inform the treating consultant in written.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
