Suggest Treatment For Painful Intercourse And Vaginal Discharge

After having unprotected sex with a guy named Justin, I developed an unusual amount of discharge. It also had a bad odor, and sex afterwards was painful. Unfortunately, the symptoms started just a few days before I left for Europe, and I was going to be there 10 weeks. I thought it was a yeast infection at first so I used monostat to try and cure it. I then left for Europe. A few days into my trip, the symptoms still continued. A started using tampons to keep the discharge under control because every day it would soak my underwear and my shorts as well, and would leave a terrible odor. While on my trip, Justin texted me and told me I needed to get tested for chlamydia, because a girl he slept with before me told him he needed to get tested. He was still waiting for the results. I was relieved that there was at least an explanation for what was going on. When I got back home, I immediately went to the gyno and I told her I had symptoms and that someone told me I might have been exposed to chlamydia. She went ahead and prescribed me arithromycin and I took it that day. My symptoms disappeared within a day or two. I figured that meant I had chlamydia. Justin texted me yesterday and told me he got his results back and that he was negative. I thought he was lying, but today I got my results back and I was negative for any stis as well. So now I m confused. If I didn t have chlamydia, why did my symptoms go away after taking the arithromycin? What did I have?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

There are many reasons why a woman may bleed after sex. The medical name for this is "postcoital bleeding". Most common is an infection, such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), or a sexually transmitted infection (STI), such as chlamydia then vaginal dryness (atrophic vaginitis) caused by reduced vaginal secretions after the menopause, damage to the vagina, such as tears caused by childbirth, or by dryness or friction during sex or cervical or endometrial polyps (benign or non-cancerous growths in the womb or the lining of the cervix). If the problem is caused by vaginal dryness, they may recommend that you try using lubricating gels. For other treatments, it would be necessary to see gynecologist and establish the right cause first.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
