Suggest Treatment For Pain In The Sternum Area

I hurt the very low end of my sternum by trying to pull a metal arm on a piece of equipment by resting the end of the metal arm on my sternum and pulling with my arms. I heard a crack in my chest and have quite a bit of pain. It is very sore to the touch and to take a big breath hurts. Should I see my doctor or will it get better on it s own. Thanks Jacqui

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
You may have cracked the xiphoid process, the tip end of the sternum. It will heal up on its own and there is nothing really a doctor can do to speed that up. If you get short of breath you should see your doctor immediately.
Regards
