Suggest Treatment For Optic Neuritis

Hi,

Recently been diagnosed with optic neuritis. The doctor I visited at my local eye hospital offered steroids to quicken bringing my vision back, however advised that it can lead to diabetes or osteoporosis, which both my grandparents suffer from, so I declined that course of treatment.

Would it be best to contact my GP and see about steroid treatment or let nature take its course and wait for the vision to repair itself?
