Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have type 2 diabetes and lymphedema in both my legs. The bottoms of my feet were numb, dr. gave me gabapentin helped with the numbness but the bottoms of my feet or still so sore that i almost cant go shopping or walk alot at work, resting help but then it as soon as i start walking they hurt. I have to have some shoes on because i cant walk barefoot. I also were compression stockings everyday until I go to bed for my lymphedema. I made an appointment with a foot doctor hoping he can help my feet. Is it worth my time or should I go to a vein doctor instead.
If by foot doctor you mean a podiatrist, then this would not be as helpful as seeing a neurologist or diabetes specialist. A neurologist would be a doctor that deals with diseases related to the nerves such as diabetic neuropathy.
Diabetic neuropathy refers to damage to the nerves of the body as a result of diabetes. It can cause numbness and pain as well as other symptoms. The dose of the gabapentin can be altered or an alternative used to help with the pain and numbness.
The compression stockings, elevating the legs as much as possible would help with the swelling but you can see someone about this as well.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James,
General & Family Physician
