The most common first step to a situation like this is to be SURE...VERY SURE that the MRI scan result is consistent with the location and type of pain your wife is having. If that is certain then, treatment can begin. If it's not totally convincing to you or the doctor that the MRI correlates with the symptoms or location of pain then, an EMG study should be performed. Once you have confirmation that in fact this is the problem to treat the first step should always be PHYSICAL OR AQUATHERAPY....Water jogging is a terrific exercise to do in a pool for this type of problem. If however, there is associated WEAKNESS in the foot or leg because of this compression and/or if she is experiencing falls from sudden loss of muscle tone in the leg, ankle, etc. then, surgery should be contemplated.....but see if you can't find someone who is good at MINIMALLY INVASIVE PROCEDURES....or what is also referred to as KEYHOLE surgery for the lumbar spine.
