Suggest Treatment For Muscle Atrophy In Thigh After Severe Sciatica

my husband has noticed muscle atrophy in his thigh after a bout of severe sciatica. he has also in the past been diagnosed with degenerative disc disease. He has not seen his doctor yet as he is on holidays. should he see someone else at the hospital or wait for the doctors return. the measurement of the affected thigh is about 1 inch less than the other thigh.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
I understand your query.
Thigh muscles are supplied by sciatic nerve.Sciatica is a disorder where sciatic nerve is compressed so,supply to the muscles are hampered./ the movements are painful.. so the use of muscles is reduced & this causes atrophy of the muscles.
Your husband also has disc problem. He needs an X ray/ MRI/ CT scan to determine the site of nerve pinching .
Treatment is by
-pain killers/ supportive medicines vitamin B12/ calcium/ vitamin D/ protein supplement.
- physiotherapy.
-in some non responding cases spinal surgery may be needed.
I would suggest you to take him to a orthopedic doctor & start with medication & physiotherapy till he can see his doctor.
Thanks.
