okay.. I concider myself a smart woman and today I was dissapointed by an ER doctors treatment of my sons case of the Mumps. He offored no treatment at all and this child is abnormally swollen, sore in both jaws, running a fever of 101...... And this doctor didn`t even offer him tylonol to ease his discomfort or make me any suggestions as a mother... so I came home and done reasech of my own......... ( Ribavirin ) Treats RSV but Mumps and RSV are the same virus and Ribavirin has proven to significantly reduce the mumps if given within the first 4 days.... My question is what is your thoughts on this topic? We are going to his pediatric Dr in the morning.... We have 2 other children and pets... I have read this can get pretty bad due to how contagious it is living in a close enviroment.. HELP put m mind at ease please....
SEE.... That wasn`t Funny either trying to charge for an intelligent question and I already know the answer.... Sincerly.... One very Smart MOM... =)

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

As per your complain Mumps Parotitis is a Viral infection and it takes for about 4 to 5 days to almost a week to resolve and as the viral infection resolves once the virus completes its cycle in human body therefore you need to give only supportive treatment to patient that involves medication to reduce fever like Acetaminophen and also cool compresses over the swollen jaws and plenty of fluids for maintaining hydration..
As far as Ribavirin is an antiviral drug but not commonly given in case of mumps and should not be taken before a proper examination and diagnosis.
You should get his investigations like x ray, salivary amylase and blood tests done and then treatment can be given..
As it is highly contagious in the initial 4 to 5 days therefore keep your kids away from your son to prevent them from catching infection..
Give him tylenol for pain, a soft and bland diet, do cool compresses over the jaws and ample of fluids..
Give him sufficient rest..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
