Suggest Treatment For Migraines And Vomiting

When my wife gets overheated (working outside or jogging on a warm humid day), she is susceptable to migraines (including vomiting) almost 100% of the time. When sick, she treats the back of her neck just under the back of her skull with an ice pack. One of the things that seems to help if the headache doesn't go away is a neck adjustment (chiropracter or atlas). If this treatment works, she recovers within 24 hours. However, this treatment doesn't work all the time but seems to work most of the time. Also, I might want to note that we have been told that one of her blood vessels running up the back of her neck is larger than normal. It does not seem to warrant any additional attention based on what the doctors have said but apparently was above average in size enough to mention.

"Neck Adjustments" as they're called by chiropractors are neither curative for headaches nor are they safe. The American Academy of Neurology has sent communications to the Chiropractic Association in the U.S. warning of these dangers and urging that the society strongly take steps to educate their members on how they should commuincate the risks of this procedure to their patients vs. the benefits. I've not heard of a single chiropractor yet who has voiced any concerns or told patients of any of the inherent risks of doing these type of very forceful and at times violent adjustments with the idea of "realigning" the neck which supposedly will cure the headache. Any procedure or intervention where a headache needs 24 hrs. to resolve after completed cannot be considered a successful intervention compared to random chance for the headache to subside on its own. I do not endorse these procedures and have seen multiple complications from themd including a 35 year old woman who suffered a brainstem infarct less than 2 hrs. after a manipulation. She died shortly after arriving to the hospital unconscious. I advise you look into the NON-chiropractic literature related to the risk of arterial dissections, cervical spine damage, and other trauma done to the neck vessels which can lead to serious complications following this procedure before your wife goes for further sessions. Looking for the CAUSE of headaches is a much more worthwhile and cost effective endeavor than trying to treat the symptoms (and that goes for the use of medication as well).
