Suggest Treatment For Metatarsal Bone Fracture

I broke the metatarsal bone in my left foot 10 days ago. I was prescribed pain medication (which is gone now), and Diclofenac Sodium 50mg. I continued to take the Diclofenac after the pain medicine was gone, but didn t notice any difference in pain or swelling, so yesterday, I didn t take any Diclofenac. By 8:00 pm, however, I noticed that I felt out of sorts, and by 9:00 pm, I had a headache that came close to the severity of a migraine. I took my Imitrex, but it didn t help; I also took Tylenol, which normally takes care of a regular headache, but still did not feel relief. I awoke in the morning with the same splitting headache. After much thought and deduction, I realized that my headache was most-likely due to the fact that I hadn t taken my Diclofenac for the 24 hours, for the first time in 10 days. I took two, in order to attempt to get the medicine in my system as soon as possible, and in an amount that would be sufficient to settle my body s reaction. It worked within the hour. I can honestly say that I have never gone to bed with a headache, taken Imitrex and Tylenol, and woken up with the same headache before. I knew it was the fact that I had not taken the Diclonfenac for nearly 36 hours, and that is why I took two. As I already stated, the headache was gone within an hour. I now realize that I cannot instantly stop this mediciation, but am nervous about attempting to ween myself without direction. Please tell me what I need to do in order to ween myself. They do not seem like they will be easy to break in half, but I cannot deal with the severe headache that resulted from this experience. I am an elementary school teacher, and cannot miss another day of work because of a headache. What can I do to not experience this side effect when I decide to stop taking this medication?

Hi
Welcome to healhcaremagic
After going through your query I concluded that you got metatarsal fracture, for which you were taking Diclofenac. After you stopped diclofenac you got headache. You thought headache was side effect of stopping diclofenac. It is not correct. Diclofenac is not a habit forming drug,Its withdrawal doesn't causes headaches. However it can relieve the headache as it analgesic. So there is no issue of weaning it. You can take it whenever you have pain and stop whenever you have no pain. You can discuss with your doctor about it. If you have any clarification then please don't hesitate to write to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.
Wishing you a good health. Take care.
