Suggest Treatment For Low Hemoglobin Levels

Hi doctor, My wife is taking Levipill 500mg twice a day for 4 months running. She is taking iron supplement for 4 moths running. Her hemoglobin level is low and beyond normal range and she is also taking iron supplement tablets. From Last 2 months she is complaining loss of energy. She feels sleepy all the time. She is generally flamboyant in nature. But she looks pale and she her flamboyancy is lost. Can this be due to Levipill or it is for her hemoglobin level? Should she take any other supplement for low hemoglobin level? Does she have to continue Levipill for rest of her life?

Hallow Dear,

Anaemia is low haemoglobin percentage. There are different types of anaemias; the commoner being iron deficiency anaemia and megaloblastic anaemia.

Haemoglobin is formed by two components: haem by iron and globin by proteins. Hence protein supplementation along with iron is necessary in case of iron deficiency anaemia. Please give her plenty of bean sprouts, eggs, meat, etc..

For megaloblastic anaemia, Folic acid is required. If you have not differentiated type of anaemia till now, give her Folic acid and Vit. B12 in addition.

Resistant anaemia could be due to certain blood losing pathologies like heavy menstruation, worms in the gut, malaria, etc. Please get it checked. Deworming is a very good option to be tried first in cases of resistant anaemia.

Please get her peripheral smear examination and thorough blood examination done to diagnose the status of blood cells which will help to detect the type of anaemia and any cause of anaemia. One has to rule out even blood cancer in cases of resistant anaemia.

Blood iron levels also will help you clinch the cause of resistant anaemia.

Please report to a haematologist for proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Only iron may not be an appropriate treatment for all types of anaemia.

I hope this guides you properly.
