Suggest Treatment For Lithium Toxicity

My father, Mr. Jawala Parshad 61 year, is a patient of bipolar disorder since 1999 and has been on lithium medication since then. In February 2016, due to overdose of Lithium,he got lithium toxicity and urine and motion stopped. Thus he was referred to PRagma hospital,Bathinda. There he had 4 times dialysis. Then he got high fever and got unconscious. Thus he was referred to Max hospital,Bathinda. After 1 month of hospitalization, he got conscious,he was given leave and brought home. After 2 weeks , due to urine problem, he was admitted to PGI chd. After 1 week he was brought back home. During the whole treatments, he could not speak and eat and is very weak physically. At present, he is conscious but not able to eat and speak and on RT feeds. His current medications and reports are available if you want. Please guide us whether the treatment is going in right direction, and what more we can do for his treatment.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

He has been suffering from bipolar disorder for a long duration. Then the lithium toxicity has a lot of effect on his physical and mental health.

In old age the body’s healing capacity is not as strong as it is in young age. As he has underwent so much during this period. I suppose as he regained consciousness, slowly he will regain energy but slowly.

Currently the doctor he is under care should be the best one to guide you on further options regarding his treatment. Follow his advice and provide support and care continuously.

Hope it helps. Feel free to contact for any further queries in future.
