Suggest Treatment For Kidney Stones

My Dad s doctor told him he had a 9 mm kidney stone and that he should get a stint put in to pass it and then 2 more operations. His friend told him that he should not have the surgery and just have them blast it out. What kind of procedure do they do with a stint?
