Suggest Treatment For Keratosis Pilaris On My Arms And Thighs

Hello sir/ma am I have keratosis Pilaris on my arms and thighs. It is severe and gets embarrassing to wear sleeveless. There are red bumps and skin is uneven. The condition gets worse in winter months. Please suggest a long term solution and suitable medication that I could use. I had been prescribed a medicine called Diprovate gel which was highly effective but it s not available in the market now.

Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic

Keratosis Pilaris is common in those who have a personal or family history of atopy, asthma, allergic rhinitis.
Clinically it presents as multiple, grouped, rough, pin head sized lesions on outer arms, outer thighs, elbow and knee.
The lesions are due to accumulation of keratin around hair follicular openings which feels like a nutmeg crater on running the fingers over them.
Treatment is with frequent use of moisturizers, specially those which contain keratolytic and exfoliating agents like like urea, lactic acid, salicylic acid glycolic acid, ammonium lactate etc. These ingredients help to exfoliate accumulated keratin follicular plugs.
Oral Vitamin A supplement in high doses of 25000 - 50000 IU per day also helps to shed off keratin plugs at follicular openings and hence improves the condition.
