Suggest Treatment For Itchy Swelling Around A Thistle Thorn Finger Wound

I got a thistle thorn stuck on my finger one day from cleaning my backyard, it hurt but nothing happened. Two days later I wake up and start to itch that same finger and it swelled. I went to the clinic but the doctor doesnt think there id anything inside just told me to take benadryl and ice. I heard that theyre so small you cant even see them. The swelling went down significantly but not entirely. I m curious, is it true that people have lost a finger to thistle thorn if not removed?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I think the finger is infected. The doctor must have seen it with a magnifying glass to see if the thorn is there and if yes he should remove it. I think you can use an antibiotic ointment or iclamol to reduce inflammation and fight infection.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
