Suggest Treatment For Itching At Incision Site After Surgery

I had surgery on my knee 1 week ago, I still have surgical tape on my incision. Today around the tape it started to get extremely itchy and has red and white bumps around it. Also I had some blood leak out of the top part of the tape. What could this be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi there,

If you are still having blood discharge 1 week later, it is possible that there has been some wound infection. Because this is unlikely to be a surface skin infection that can be cleared with a cream, I would advise you to visit your local doctor's to look at whether there is a need for a course of oral antibiotics. If the infection is not cleared, the healing of the wound will be delayed, or worse, not happen at all.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
