Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been suffering from what my doctor diagnosed as Irritable Bowel Syndrome now for 2 years. It all started when my work load at work increased and I seemed to lose my ability to handle stress. Having had an adrenal gland removed in 2010 I always thought that once the stress got so bad I lost my ability to produce efficient quantities of cortisol. I saw an endocrinologist and she tested my urine and blood for cortisol levels which she claimed were fine. Well it s been a year since then and I decided to pay for my own saliva test which shows how the cortisol fluctuates throughout the day. The saliva test showed I had low cortisol in the afternoon, evening and bed time and that my DHEA was signifficantly low. My doctor prescribed me with amitiptyline for IBS and I had taken it for 5 months and quit cold turkey in January 2015. Within two weeks of quitting it I started to get worse symptoms the worst being extreme constipation and numbness in my hands and feet especially during the night while trying to sleep. After 4 weeks of being off the amitriptyline I started getting extreme pain below my adams apple and my doctor told me it was from stress. After doing my own research and putting the pieces together I realize now its my thyroid. My question to you is can going off amitriptyline cold turkey cause the serotonin to drop and directly affect my thyroid? I know for fact it s my thyroid hurting me at the moment and I suspect it s been the cause of my IBS symptoms all along. I am clearly not metabolizing food properly as my stools have been tiny, light coloured and awful smelling since qutting the medication. I am wondering why else my thyroid would be hurting me so much after I quit the antidepressant medication when before I was on the medication and while taking it these symptoms were minimal.
These vicious cycle of symptoms are due to hormone imbalances, possibly from stopping antidepressant and giving a chain of events. You should consult with fresh lab reports for further management guidelines.
