Hello, and I hope I can help you today.
If you've not had a recent pelvic examination, I strongly suggest that you see a women's health or GYN provider in order to check and make sure that your coil is still in place. The copper coil IUD is effective for up to 10 years, however if it is dislodged or in the wrong position it can cause bleeding and also not be effective in preventing
pregnancy.
It is unlikely that your bladder infection has anything to do with the symptoms, other than it may have caused a
thrush infection of your vagina, which may also cause irritation and bleeding from the IUD. Other infections of the
cervix or the coil itself can cause irregular bleeding as well. Rarely, injuries to the
uterus can be caused by imbedding or dislodging of the coil.
Either way, a physical examination, to rule out a problem with the coil or
vaginal infection, would be what I would recommend at this point. I would consider using a backup
contraceptive method as well or refrain from intercourse until you have your IUD evaluated.
I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today, and that my advice was helpful.
Best wishes,
Dr. Brown
