Suggest Treatment For Improper Epiglottis Functioning Due To Which Food Is Entering Into Lungs
My father had throat surgery because of cancer in 1974. The cancer has never returned however for the last 10 or more years he has had difficulty in swallowing. He is now 88 years old and in good health considering the sensitive throat. He had an MRI today at the hospital and it was determined that his epiglottis was not functioning properly. It would open sometimes and not other times allowing what he swallowed to go into his lungs. What are his chances in correcting this problem?
Chronic aspiration due to inadequate epiglottic functioning is initially managed with deglutition exercises, changing consistency of feeds to solids/semisolids,feeds only in propped up position, nasogastric feeding.Considering his age thes will be better option for him rather than going for invasive methods.
