Suggest Treatment For Hypothyroidism

When I was around 12 I took thyroid medication for a year or so for hypothyroidism. I have had PCOS since 14 and currently take metformin to help manage those symptoms. All my blood tests are "normal" for thyroid function but I still have the same symptoms I did way back then that coincide with hypothyroidism. I have 2 female family members that did saliva testing before their thyroid problems were found. Is this something I should look into and why would someone have to NOT take thyroid medicine if they had started it in the past?

Hello and thank you for asking!
I have gone carefully through your concern.
You are right, mos of the thyroid pathologies that cause hypothyroidism are chronic.
The most common cause is autoimmune thyroiditis that is confirmed by checking thyroid antibodies (AntiTPO and AntiTg). If they are positive than you should keep under close monitoring the thyroid hormones.
What can explain the confirmed hypothyroidism you treated when you were 12 years old, is a iodine deficiency due to inappropriate iodine intake with the diet.
So i would recommend to check the antibodies mentioned above and if they are positive, keep monitoring thyroid hormones every 1 year.

Best wishes,
Dr.Mirjeta
