Suggest Treatment For High Cholesterol

I am a 49 yr old female with a cholesterol level of 253, LDL 197. My father died at 56 of congestive heart failure (had his first heart attack at 38). One of his brothers has had a heart transplant and another died of a heart attack at 75 yrs. My mothers father died of a heart attack. My doctor gave me a prescription for Crestor 5mg. I really do not want to take drugs to lower this, but he says that my cholesterol is hereditary and that I have no choice. I am 5'3", 142 lbs. Is he correct?

Hello. Thank you for asking on HCM. I understand your concerns.

High cholesterol is a direct risk factor for coronary artery disease and, therefore, cardiac events. Your total cholesterol level is not too dramatic. However, your LDL fraction is high. Besides high cholesterol levels, I can see that you have a strong positive familial history of cardiac events.

There are diet and lifestyle changes that can help you lower the cholesterol, such as a diet rich in fibres (green leafy vegetables and fruit), rarely having red meat, but mostly chicken and fish, as well as a 40-60 minute everyday physical activity (going to the gym or a swimming pool, walking). Beside these measures, my opinion is that you should start on a cholesterol-lowering drug, such as rosuvastatin (Crestor) 10 mg x 1 tb/d. After a month, get your blood cholesterol and liver enzymes.

I hope I was helpful. Feel free to ask again. Take care.
