Suggest Treatment For High BP

I m a 48 year old male, athletic (6 2 205lbs, 10%bf) BUT my BP is high - just checked it at 153/98. I lift heavy weights-have my whole life and I know that could add the the problem but it s such a lifestyle I d hate to give it up. High BP runs in my family - 78 yr old dad has been on medication for years, although he was never an exercise person.I own a business and have my share of stresses. I m kind of worried as I get older. I try to relax and have a positive outlook, and eat well, but just can t seem to get the BP down.

Hello,

One of the lifestyle things you can do is to lower sodium and increase potassium by adding more fruits and vegetables to increase potassium and throwing away the salt shaker and staying away from processed foods assuring you don't take in more than 2,000 mg of sodium per day. The electrolyte drinks you may be drinking have sodium in them. You don't need all that sodium with high blood pressure. Lifting weights with high blood pressure can be a risk factor for an aneurysm.

I would limit my lifting weights until the blood pressure is under control. While hydration is important and electrolytes are essential, you are going to benefit from cutting down on sodium and increasing potassium. If it is in your genes, you may be fighting an uphill battle, but one thing is for sure, the blood pressure is in the hypertensive range and with your lifting weights you are putting your heart at risk. One way or the other we need to get your BP controlled.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
