Suggest Treatment For High BP Despite Taking Coversyl

Hi I have high blood pressure, recently as high as 199/90. I am not overweight. I am on coversyl 4 mg OD because a fill-in Dr. changed it from ramapril 10 OD, saying that ram only covers 9 hrs whereas cov is good for 18 hrs. What is your understanding of that? Also, when I first started taking ram about 1 1/2 years ago, my BP was around 140/84. In my opinion, neither of these meds is working. Thanks. I really look forward to your reply. Darlene

Hello,

High blood pressure, in most cases, needs more than one medication to be under control. Thus, it is not that the drug is not helping you but you may need a second medication as different blood pressure drugs work with different mechanisms and they augment the effect of one another.
You may need to add a diuretic such as hydrochlorothiazide or a calcium-blocker (amlodipine) or a beta-blocker (Corvitol).

The doctor will need to do a thorough history and possibly some blood tests and an ECG before deciding which of these to add.

I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
