I was diagnosed with acute onset herpes simplex virus (genital) about 2 months. I was prescribed acyclovir 400mg 4 times daily for 14 days. I have gone through 2 entire rounds of this and each time it gets better. Although I have completed the prescription exactly as I was directed, within days, I suffer another outbreak. I'm on my 3rd outbreak now. Each one is as severe as the 1st outbreak and this one is the worst yet! Do you have any idea why the extremely painful outbreaks keep happening when I am taking my meds EXACTLY as prescribed and do you have any suggestions on what I can do to help the pain.
Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic
Genital herpes can be recurrent. The recurrences can be as severe as the primary or first episode. The recurrences of genital herpes are more frequent when it is a newly acquired infection. The frequency of recurrences decreases with time. The recurrences if far and few are treated the same way as primary episode of genital herpes (episodic treatment). However, those individuals who have very frequent recurrences of genital herpes they are ideal candidates for continuous therapy with once daily antivirals (suppressive therapy )i.e either acyclovir or valacyclovir. You can talk more about suppressive therapy with your treating doctor.
