Suggest Treatment For Herpangina

My daughter 9, she has type I diabetes, was diagnosed w herpangina today. I have 2 questions.
Her doctor suggested she use mouth wash. And gargle with it to kill germs and bacteria...but it is very painful for her to do it.
And...
How long is she contagious for...? During the incubation time or anytime while she has the symptoms?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
I had gone through your query and understand your concern.

Herpangina is a self limiting viral disease. Your daughter will be fine within a week. Ask her to drink cold water, fruit juice, milk etc. Avoid hot, spicy food. You may ask her to use some anesthetic gel to reduce pain while gargling or eating.

She will be contagious for a week.

Hope this helps.

If you have any other queries, feel free to ask. I'll be happy to help.

Regards,
Dr.Prathap Kumar
