Suggest Treatment For Herniated Disc In The Lower Back

Hi, I am a female athlete and I am 99% sure I have a herniated disc in my lower back. Over the summer I got xrays done and it showed that it was compressed, but then once I came to school and started playing soccer again I tried to play through the pain. I cant stop because my coach thinks I am fine, but what other problems could this cause if I don t get it treated?

Hi there,

A herniated disc can cause way more problems than just pain. The reason it is hurting is not due to the disc itself, but because the disc is pinching on the nerve that is passing next to it. If you don't get it treated, or at least rest to give the inflammation time to calm down, your nerve could get damaged. This can range from temporary numbness of the affected area to permanent weakness of the muscles involved.

I strongly suggest that you get an MRI done, since this will show the condition of the discs and nerves, and not just the bones like an X-ray would. This is even more important for you if you are an athlete, because you will need treatment if you intend to continue having good musculoskeletal health. You need to be clear to the doctor about how important the sport is to you, and treatment needs to take into consideration your plans for the future.

Hope this helps, and all the best to you.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
