Suggest Treatment For Hernia In Stomach

This is a question for a GI MD or someone knowledgeable about Crohn s disease and ostomies. My brother has a severe hernia in his stoma area . It s the size of an oversize softball just hanging off. He has not seen any MD for the Crohn s in years. I suggested (am an RN also with Crohn s) that he be seen by a GI specialist before he even has a surgical consult (he has other problems that would make giving anesthesia highly dangerous). His PCP will not give him a referral. How do you think this should be handled. Also, if he does have surgery I believe he should go to a Boston hospital or Leahy Cli nic where he has such a complicated case. Don t you think he should see a GI MD before he has surgery. Plus he has problems breathing which the docs cannot identify the cause of. Cannot they give a spinal or do it via laparoscopy? Thank- you. Mary

Hello,
Welcome to HCM.

I have read your query and understand the problem.

This hernia over stomach which you are talking about could be umbilical hernia or inguinal hernia but it is very difficult to comment on any particular hernia without proper clinical examination.

Since hernia has become over-sized softball then your brother must see gastro-surgeon immediately to evaluate it further.

The doctor will try to identify whether this hernia is reducible or not after carefully examination of the local area.

In most of severe hernia cases, surgery is the only and most effective treatment and there is no much role of conservative treatment.

Your brother's breathing problem must be evaluated by MD physician or pulmonologist to detect the exact underlying cause.

Before sorting out this breathing issue, physician will not give medical fitness for spinal anesthesia or his operation (open surgery or laproscopic surgery).

So,he should see GI specialist immediately.
