Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a hernia in my groin. It is a bulge but doesn t bother me. I don t want to have surgery as I m 83 yrs old. My dr. said if it became red and angry, I would need surgery. How do I prevent that from happening other than the obvious of not lifting heavy things?
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. An inguinal hernia occurs when abdominal tissue pushes through a weak spot in your groin muscle. This causes a bulge in the groin or scrotum. It tends to become bigger and might land up in complications resulting in strangulated hernia. Hence, surgery is the only treatment and cure for inguinal hernia. If a hernia can be pushed back (reduced), surgery can be done at the person's convenience. If it cannot be pushed back, surgery must be done at the earliest. Two types of surgery are done to repair inguinal hernias: 1. Open inguinal hernia repair - herniorrhaphy and hernioplasty 2. Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair Hence, kindly get evaluated by Surgeon as to what category you fall to and plan for surgery accordingly. Hope the information provided would be useful. All the best.
