Suggest Treatment For Hernia In A 55-year-old

Hi I m a 55 year old female with a huge hernia on my right side, it s really stopping me from activities and it s painful, I also have 6 fractured ribs that are in different states of healing, Is surgery an option, or am I asking for a whole set of new problems?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I read your question carefully and I understand your concern. The surgery in itself is a simple procedure for an experienced surgeon and when the symptoms are proven to be due to the compression caused by the removed hernia it is usually beneficial. The only issue is whether you've left some time to conservative management as in many cases patients improve even without surgery eventually. So if the symptoms have only recently started I would give at least 4-6 weeks to physiotherapy and anti-inflammatory medications before committing to surgery. Reasons to go for surgery sooner would be if there is compression of the nerve bundle or a nerve root causing paralysis or bladder control issues, in that case it may be intervened on an emergency basis.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
