Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My mother is 76. She has a hernia on the left side of her body about the size of a football. Her general Dr. thinks it is best to do nothing about it. It is making her miserable. She has much pain from the constipation. She had surgery for a cyst that had consumed her ovary and the GYNC. pushed the hernia back in and did nothing else to address that-also telling her it would be best to leave it alone. This was 2 years ago and the hernia is much larger now. Why do these Dr. s think it best to do nothing? Should we take her to see a specialist?
In any case of hernia which is not reducible, surgical repair (hernioplasty) is the best way of treatment.
In your mother's case,if this herni is too large and can not be managed by conservative means then one should always go for surgical intervention.
Her constipation could be triggering or stimulatory factor for this hernia.
For this, she will need to see general surgeon who will examine her hernia by various tests including clinical tests and ultrasound of local part and will explain you to get operated.
She must have to be physically fit before going for an operation.
So,kindly consult above doctor and take a second opinion.
