Suggest Treatment For Headache/constipation While On Iron(IV) Therapy For Short Bowel Syndrome

I am 23 years old, female, with Short Bowel Syndrome. I started Iron IV therapy on Thursday, and have been in misery since. I had therapy in the past, but not with this bad of a reaction. I have extreme body and bone pain, back pain, a severe headache, stomach ache, nausea, constipation, painful urination, weakness, occasional chest pain (feels like heart palpitations), and am barely able to eat or drink. I am in pretty bad pain most of the time since late Thursday. I have tried benadryl, tylenol, and dramamine. I cannpt take NSAIDS because of my short gut. I don't usually go to the doctor for pain reasons, but I have been considering urgent care because of hw uncomfortable I am. I want to know if this is normal, is it even worth it seeking urgent care, and how can I prevent the next one in two weeks from being this bad. I don't know if I can go through this again.

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history and understood the concerns.
Short Bowel Syndrome in a 23 year old is noted.
Iron IV therapy in past was suitable hence it is unlikely that all the symptoms that you have mentioned like extreme body and bone pain, back ache, headache stomach ache, nausea, constipation and all need to be well identified.
Hence it is necessary to go to Urgent care for clinical evaluation, examination and investigations to get the exact cause so that a proper management can be done.
If the iron salt was changed during the present therapy then it is possible to have some reaction.
PLease get the serum iron and hemosiderin levels checked to decide whether you need Iron therapy and if required can go for the past salt which suited you so well.
Also try natural iron in the form of pomegranate and beet-root as these may not cause any problems.
