First, it is a very good news than you didnt fracture your ankle since this could have gone a lot worse! So, in this point of view, you are lucky!
On the other hand, x-ray examination can detect even small
fractures in almost all cases and therefore we are sure your ankle bones are not fractured!
Since the X-ray examination did not show sings of fracture than the doctor is right in telling you that you are experiencing an ankle spray: the joint withstood all the force and energy of the crush, the bones did survive but the ligaments are injured instead since all the energy wass passed to them. This is called a contusion: various degree of tendine
injury, accompanied by excudation, swelling, pain and rigidity of the joint! Basically the fluids get out of their normal structures, invade the articular joint space causing edema and pain.
What to do? The best thing, if
bone fracture is excluded, is to wrap the joint with grilled raw onion mixed with salt (possibly black sea salt, which is raugh and white bur rather dark grey and with big unregular grains, not processed salt which is white and with tiny grains) as this mixture sucks the extra liquids from the joint space thus restoring its function in 1-2 days. Do like this: grill half an onion, mix with the salt (table salt if you can not find black salt), and in a piece of bandage or clothe wrap the joint up in order for this mixture to cover all the swollen joint. Preferably this is done before sleeping and is kept all night. You can repeat this the next day as well and also the third day if needed because it does not harm you.
With this home treatment your joint will be much better as to pass the acute phase. After the swelling is gone please consult a physiotherapist because this is the one who will tell you what to do in order to fully rehabilitate your ankle!
